When school isn’t working, many families start searching for alternatives. Online SEND tutoring is one option that often comes up, but it can raise lots of questions.
Below, we answer some of the most common questions we are asked about online SEND tutoring at Love2Learn Education.
What is online SEND tutoring?
Online SEND tutoring is personalised, one-to-one support delivered remotely by a specialist educator or teacher.
At Love2Learn Education, online tutoring is not about replicating a classroom through a screen. It is about creating a calm, flexible learning space that adapts to the learner’s needs, pace and emotional wellbeing.

Sessions are designed around the learner, with a strong focus on relationships, trust and confidence building.
Who is online SEND tutoring suitable for?
Online SEND tutoring can be helpful for children and young people who:
Are struggling to attend school due to anxiety or unmet needs
Are autistic or neurodivergent and find traditional settings overwhelming
Are out of school or between placements
Are accessing EOTAS provision
Are home educated
Are preparing for exams after a long period of disengagement
For many learners, learning from home or another familiar environment reduces pressure and helps them feel more regulated and ready to engage.
Is online tutoring effective for SEND learners?
Yes, when it is delivered in the right way.
Effective online SEND tutoring prioritises emotional safety, flexibility and relationships. When learners feel understood and supported, they are more able to engage with learning and make progress.
Progress may look different for each learner. It might involve rebuilding confidence, re-engaging with learning, or developing the skills needed to move towards future goals such as reintegration or qualifications.
How do online sessions work?
Online sessions are delivered one-to-one by a Specialist Teacher.
Sessions are carefully planned but remain responsive. We adapt content, pace and structure based on how the learner is feeling on the day, as well as their longer-term needs.
Technology is used simply and purposefully to support engagement, not to overwhelm. The aim is to make learning feel manageable and achievable.
How is online SEND tutoring different from mainstream tutoring?
Mainstream tutoring often focuses narrowly on academic outcomes and assumes a learner is already able to engage.
Online SEND tutoring takes a different approach. It recognises that emotional wellbeing, regulation and confidence are essential foundations for learning. Academic progress is important, but it is not rushed or forced.
Support is trauma-informed, relationship-based and shaped around the whole learner.
Can online SEND tutoring support learners who are out of school?
Yes. Online SEND tutoring is often used to provide continuity of learning for learners who are out of school or between placements.
It can also form part of a wider plan to help a learner gradually rebuild confidence and re-engage with education at a pace that feels safe.
We work collaboratively with families, schools and local authorities to ensure support aligns with wider plans and responsibilities.
How do you work with families and professionals?
Partnership is central to our approach.
We communicate regularly with families and, where appropriate, with schools and local authorities. Clear reporting and shared understanding help ensure that online tutoring complements other support and fits within the learner’s wider context.
Our aim is always to work together in the best interests of the learner.
Is online SEND tutoring right for my child?
Online SEND tutoring is not the right fit for every learner, but for many it provides a calmer, more flexible way to re-engage with learning.
If you are unsure, a conversation can help explore whether this approach could be appropriate for your child or learner, and what support might look like.
