Personalised support for learners who cannot access the main classroom offer

A calm and flexible offer for learners who need something different

We provide alternative provision for learners who cannot access their full school timetable or who are unable to engage with the main classroom offer.
Some learners can attend school but need a quieter, more personalised approach. Others are waiting for a more suitable placement or are currently unable to attend due to anxiety or complex needs.

Our aim is always to help the learner feel safe, engaged and ready to learn in a way that fits their profile.

Understanding the learner’s needs

Before support begins, we gather information from SENCOs, case managers and staff who know the learner well.

We look at communication needs, sensory differences, emotional wellbeing and any professional recommendations.

A specialist educator then builds a trusting relationship with the learner and introduces predictable routines that reduce pressure and support engagement.

What this support can include

Alternative provision can take place:

  • in school, outside the main classroom

  • at home

  • in the community

  • online

  • or as a blended offer

Sessions may include academic learning, emotional regulation, communication support, creative tasks or work linked to the EHCP.

Everything is adapted to the learner’s pace, interests and capacity on the day.

Supporting learners awaiting placement

We often work with learners who are waiting for a specialist school place or who cannot access their current setting fully.

Our role is to provide stability, safety and meaningful learning while long-term arrangements are being explored.

Keeping schools and LAs informed

Communication is clear and consistent.

We share regular updates on engagement, attendance patterns and progress.
Written reports can be provided each term or for annual reviews.

Safeguarding remains central and we follow school procedures at all times.

Reintegration and next steps

If reintegration is part of the plan, we support this in a calm and well-paced way.

This might include supported time on site, joint sessions with staff or a gradual increase in time in school.

We always work at the learner’s pace to help transitions feel safe and achievable.
